Video shows the three processes I use to remove material before using finer tools to add detail. The tools are hammer and chisel, gravers along with a bridge and a Flex-Shaft using rotary tools. The first rotary tool being used is a carbide fine pyramid shape. I grind these shapes with a diamond wheel, using worn out carbide burs as stock. These are great tools for both material-removal and cutting steep side walls. I make all my chisels by hand, sharpen all my gravers to custom points.
The coin used in this video is a 5 ounce silver coin (Yellowstone) from the "America the Beautiful" series from the U. S. Mint. The engraving is being done on the portrait side. The only original element remaining on this side is the word "America". The design on this side will also relate to the Yellowstone National Park. At this point, the coin is about 75% complete. I will post another video when it is complete.
