The Wave Cave - One of the Most Popular Hikes in the Superstition Wilderness
EDIT - I made a mistake on the permits part. I have since edited that section out of the video so it won't show for future viewings. I spoke to a Ranger at the Superstitions today and he clarified that permits ARE NOT required for the Superstitions or Tonto National Forest. There is a small section along this trail that is State Trust Land. There are signs stating you need a permit to access that portion. I have never seen anyone from that department in the Superstitions - not that I am saying to not get a permit.....But if you are worried, you can park at the Lost Gold Mine trailhead just up the (Peralta) road and access the trail from that direction, avoiding the State Trust portion.
I am lucky enough to live close to the Superstition Wilderness in Tonto National Forest. The Superstitions, or the Supes as we locals call them, are a rugged and wild mountain range encompassing nearly 160,000 acres. It is home to countless maintained and unmaintained trails. Weavers Needle, the Peralta Trail, Battleship Mountain, Reavis Ranch and, of course, The Flatiron (Siphon Draw) are some of the more prominent features. Then there's the legend of the Lost Duchman's Gold Mine...An interesting subject if you want to do some research into it.
But then, there's the Wave Cave. The Wave Cave is a well known and extremely popular trail, despite not even being an 'official' park trail. The reason is pretty simple; it's a fairly simple hike to a cave that provides a very unique photo op. In fact, it's popularity is why I have avoided it for so long. But one thing lead to another, and I found myself at the trailhead. The trail itself is straightforward and very typical of the Superstitions. It's short and has a decent but manageable challenge. Then there's the cave.
I was very pleasantly surprised. After staying away for so long, I was able to beat most of the crowds just by going early. The hike was beautiful and the cave was very interesting. So if you haven't hiked the Wave Cave yet, go check it out. Hopefully this video helps you know what to expect.
