Song Dae-nam of South Korea won the Olympic judo gold medal Wednesday in the men's 90-kilogram category after defeating Asley Gonzalez of Cuba in overtime of the final. Song secured the gold by using speedy footwork to throw Gonzalez for the win. Both players were on the defensive for most of the match.
Earlier in the day, Song eliminated Japanese fighter Masashi Nishiyama, one of the favorites who later won a bronze. The 33-year-old Song finished just 17th at the world championships last year. His win continued a strong tournament for South Korea, which had already won one gold and one bronze in judo this week. The other bronze medal was won by Ilias Iliadis of Greece.
