10. SOUNDBITE: (German) Angela Merkel, German Chancellor:
"I talked with the Chinese President and it was a very constructive talk in which we discussed both our bilateral relations and also international conflicts. We spoke at length about the question of a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Iran. China and Germany think that the conflict should be solved diplomatically, that Iran shouldn't be allowed to possess nuclear weapons and that Iran has to rebuild confidence in the international community and therefore we want, here firmly together, to further direct our efforts towards reaching these goals. Regarding our bilateral relations, our economic relations have developed very well. I once again addressed the issue of the protection of intellectual property, just as I did today with the prime minister, and there is a frankness on the Chinese side on this issue (and a willingness) to pay more attention to it. And of course we also discussed the issue of civil society, human rights and we also went into the question of the status of religion, which holds great significance for the deepening of our relations and in general I was very satisfied with the discussion with the Chinese president."

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in Beijing on Monday that she and Chinese President Hu Jintao had agreed during talks that Iran must not have nuclear weapons or proliferate weapons of mass destruction.
But Merkel, speaking after meeting with Hu, didn't say whether the two sides had discussed possible sanctions on Tehran, which Germany supports and Beijing opposes.
China, a permanent UN Security Council member, and a bloc of European countries, including Germany, are at odds over how to get Tehran to give up its nuclear programme.
After meeting earlier with Premier Wen Jiabao, Merkel said they agreed Iran "shouldn't proliferate weapons of mass destruction".
The German leader said she and Wen had also discussed human rights, which she called "an important issue of bilateral dialogue".
Merkel is leading a 40-member trade delegation that includes business executives and German Economy Minister Michael Glos and Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee.
The two governments signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in establishing high-speed railway transport in China, but there was no indication of whether Beijing planned to buy more German technology for magnetic-levitation railways.
On Tuesday, Merkel is scheduled to ride the world's only commercially operating maglev rail line in Shanghai, built by a German consortium.
Merkel will also meet with a Shanghai bishop to focus on religious freedom under the country's current leadership.
