Gastrulation and Neurulation Animated I Embryology I Early Embryogenesis
Gastrulation and Neurulation. Formation for the germ layers and neural tube.
Gastrulation is a phase early in the embryonic development of most animals, during which the blastula (a single-layered hollow sphere of cells) is reorganized into a multilayered structure known as the gastrula. Before gastrulation, the embryo is a continuous epithelial sheet of cells; by the end of gastrulation, the embryo has begun differentiation to establish distinct cell lineages, set up the basic axes of the body (e.g. dorsal-ventral, anterior-posterior), and internalized one or more cell types including the prospective gut.
Neurulation refers to the folding process in vertebrate embryos, which includes the transformation of the neural plate into the neural tube. The embryo at this stage is termed the neurula.
The process begins when the notochord induces the formation of the central nervous system (CNS) by signaling the ectoderm germ layer above it to form the thick and flat neural plate. The neural plate folds in upon itself to form the neural tube, which will later differentiate into the spinal cord and the brain, eventually forming the central nervous system. Computer simulations found that cell wedging and differential proliferation are sufficient for mammalian neurulation.

Notochord & Mesoderm Formation | Lect 8 Chap 4 Biology 2nd Year
The notochord arises from the axial mesoderm at about 16 days and is completely formed by the beginning of the fourth week. It defines the longitudinal axis of the embryo, determines the orientation of the vertebral column, and persists as the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disks.

The notochord derives during gastrulation (infolding of the blastula, or early embryo) from cells that migrate anteriorly in the midline between the hypoblast and the #epiblast (inner and outer layers of the blastula). These cells coalesce immediately beneath the developing central nervous system.
What is the main function of the notochord?
The notochord is an embryonic midline structure common to all members of the phylum Chordata, providing both mechanical and signaling cues to the developing embryo. In invertebrates, the notochord arises from the dorsal organizer and it is critical for proper vertebrate development.
