Tip 1: Hydration is Key
First things first, Sydney Marathon is always hot. Always, always, always hot. So, you need to get those electrolytes on board *before* the race. Don't try to play catch-up halfway through—trust me, it won’t end well. If you’re using electrolytes like Tailwind, you need to get a litre of that in before you even hit the start line. Sure, you might need to visit the loo a couple of times, but you'll be super hydrated, and that’s going to make a big difference. And hey, if you do need to go during the race, don't worry—just blame it on the sweat! 😉
Tip 2: The 32km Warm-up
Next up, if it’s your first Sydney Marathon, treat the first 32km as a warm-up and the last 10km as the actual race. This way, you’ll apportion your energy wisely and avoid hitting that dreaded wall. We’ve all been there, right? Over-enthusiastic, over-confident, or just a bit inexperienced—so start slow, work your way into it, and remember: the marathon really starts at 32km.
Tip 3: Nothing New on Race Day
Crispy’s favorite—nothing new on race day. Seriously, don’t try new shoes, new shorts, new shirts, new nutrition, or even a new breakfast. Keep it super simple. K-I-S-S: Keep It Super Simple. Stick to what’s worked for you in the past, and you’ll avoid any nasty surprises halfway through. And remember, if you do try something new and it goes wrong, just laugh it off. We're all in this together!
Tip 4: Wear Your Pink Shirt with Pride
We’ve got a pink wave hitting the streets of Sydney on race day! 🌊 If you’re part of the Manly Beach Running Club, wear your pink shirt with pride. We’ve got about 15 athletes out there, so let’s show up as a team. If you see someone in pink, give them a wave, a high-five, or even a sweaty hug—just keep that team spirit alive!
Tip 5: Smile and Have Fun
Last but definitely not least, remember to smile. The marathon is fun. Yes, fun! 😁 If you convince yourself that it’s going to be fun, it will be. Things are only hard when we say they’re hard, and they’re easy when we say they’re easy. Trust your brain chemistry—go in with patience, gratitude, and joy, and you’ll have a fantastic day.
And don’t forget—go to the loo before the start, and if you do happen to wet your pants, just tell everyone it’s sweat. No judgment here! 😂
Alright, pinkies, let’s have an amazing race. See you out there on the course!
