Ever wonder what happens to a tooth when it gets a crown?

In today's video, we're trimming a tooth that was previously restored with a white filling. During that appointment, a crack was detected internally that posed structural risk to the tooth. If left alone, such cracks can propagate into the pulp (nerve) of the tooth, leading to a root canal procedure. Other times, they can spread to the external surface of the tooth and result in cusp fracture.

Crowns, by providing something known as cuspal coverage, redirect bite forces to discourage further propagation of such cracks.

Here's how we trim a tooth for a dental crown - we need to make just enough space for the crown to slide on without getting in the way of the teeth on either side, as well as the tooth it chews against.
