What began as a great day with friends turned tragic when West Georgia graduate student Aimee Copeland encountered an equipment malfunction while on a homemade zip line. Falling almost six feet to water and rocks below, she sustained a deep gash on her leg and contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and aggressive flesh-eating bacterial infection. The result was the loss of her left leg, right foot and both hands. Also, during this ordeal, her organs began to fail and she was put on life support with a slim chance of survival. Aimee Copeland and her father Andy Copeland inspired a near-capacity ballroom at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead on Wednesday, Nov. 13 as they presented the GHA Annual Meeting Keynote Address.
