The knee lever (aka “John Wayne Sweep”) is one of the strongest off-balancing techniques we have from the bottom half-guard position.
(💥 My full HALF-BUTTERFLY GUARD Instructional is here: [ Ссылка ])
When you’re playing the HALF butterfly guard you can still use the knee lever - but you need to make a few adjustments. When we use it, it’s often not a FULL knee lever since we only have one foot on the outside to use as a wedge against our partner’s knee.
But we have the additional power of a butterfly hook - and it’s capacity to lift and elevate our partner - so we can create a kind of hybrid attack. The result is a strong off-balancing effect that can lead to opportunities for double leg reversals, knee lever sweeps and even ashi garami leg lock attacks.
