Within @EuropesRailJointUndertaking's Smart Wayside Object Controller (SWOC), the Swedish project team of Alstom has focused on the realisation of a prototype called cableless railway embankment to improve overall energy and cost efficiency in the railway system and to optimise flow at level crossings.
The SWOC is based on our latest generation Object Controller System, OCS950 version 5, for Mainline and Urban solutions. The system has a decentralized architecture, with local energy supply and storage, and uses wireless communication, thus minimising the need to install cables.
The concept has other potentials as well, such as support for emergency vehicles to postpone or inhibit activation of the level crossing to enable safe and efficient pass of the track and thereby avoiding unnecessary delays during critical situations.
The prototype has reached Technical Readiness Level 6 and has been exposed to field test in close collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration, @trafikverket.
