Located within Greater London, in its easternmost borough of Havering, is the town of Romford.
The first recorded mention of Romford dates from 1177, when it was written as 'Romfort', from the Old English 'rūm' and 'ford', meaning the wide and spacious river crossing. It should be noted that the River Rom runs through the town, although culverted underground through most of the town centre. The River Rom supposedly takes its name from the town, rather than vice versa.
A royal charter was granted to Romford in 1247 by Henry III, from which point on it has held a regular market. By the 15th century its market had become well-known for the sale of leather goods made in nearby Hornchurch. Other industries which emerged included cloth making, weaving, charcoal burning, metal working and brewing. Additionally, Romford became a coaching stop for those travelling from London to Colchester. The Golden Lion, seen shortly after the 9-minute mark, was originally a coaching inn from the 15th century, although the exterior is a little more modern.
In 1839 the railway arrived in Romford courtesy of the Eastern Counties Railway. Today it has direct routes both to central London via London Overground and to Colchester via Greater Anglia (which reaches Liverpool Street station in the other direction). At the time of its opening it brought a boost to Romford's brewing industry. The Star Brewery was opened in 1708, and became one of the main employers in the town. At its peak in the late 20th century, it employed over 1,000 workers. However, in 1993 the brewery was closed and redeveloped as The Brewery shopping centre in 2001 on the same site.
From 1931 to 1961, Romford's population surged from around 36,000 to around 115,000. This can be attributed to rehousing which occurred post-Second World War. Historically, Romford has been a part of the county of Essex until 1965, at which point it became part of the Greater London administrative area. According to a YouGov survey in 2020, only 34% of Londoners consider Romford to be part of London, compared to 46% who do not.
Famous people from Romford include Billy Ocean (although born in Trinidad and Tobago), and Richard Madeley. Steve Davis began playing snooker at the Lucania Snooker Club in Romford, earning him the nickname 'Romford Slim'.
