For a successful and quality custom tumbler with CrystaLac, preparation is key. Stainless steel tumblers come with a protective coating that repels water. This coating must either be removed or isolated from CrystaLac base coats and top coats or the factory coating will repel future coats and you will be highly disappointed.
In this tumbler tutorial we will be reinforcing that preparation of the surface is key to a successful application of CraftNique Universal White or one of the other base coats you may use on a DIY tumbler. CrystaLac is and alternative to creating tumblers with epoxy, it is a water based epoxy free product line that gives you a safe way to create.
You can acheive the same look and feel as epoxy tumblers without the dangerous fumes and reactions that come with mixing epoxy and using in an indoor environment. CrystaLac created tumblers are less bulky, weigh less and have an equivalent finish to the epoxy method.
You have the option of buying a sanded stainless cup. You run the risk of it rusting before you receive it.
You can sand, either by hand or with a power sander. This is the preferred method but it is a real pain in the backside to get all the coating off, wash it down with dish soap and denatured alcohol. The major drawback with this is missing a spot or getting in a hurry and not getting an adequate sand done. You may not notice that you missed a spot until several coats later with CrystaLac Brite Tone or Extreme Protection and the newly applied coats start coming away from the tumbler.
A third way is to use Zinsser Bullseye Spray Shellac as a prep / primer coating. This video goes into more detail on how to do this procedure to create a good adhesive surface for the future coats of CrystaLac base and top coats, glitter, vinyl or other design.
