China's China Three Gorges (CTG) Company claims to have produced the world's biggest per-unit capacity offshore wind turbine in Fujian Province, located in East China. According to CTG, the 16 Megawatt wind turbine has a hub height of 480 ft (146 m), which is almost the same as the height of a 50-story building, and a world-record-breaking 827 ft (252 m) long impeller diameter.
The turbine is a breakthrough in the manufacture of high-quality wind turbines, and it was developed by CRG and Xinjiang Goldwind Sci & Tech Co., Ltd. China Three Gorges (CTG) and Goldwind are working together on this project, and they've said it proves China is now "leading, not behind" in the global wind market.
The 16MW unit, according to CTG and Goldwind, is the most powerful generator ever constructed. CTG claims that the massive rotor diameter's resulting 50,000-square-meter swept area can provide enough energy to supply 36,000 homes for an entire year.
It is anticipated to generate an average of over 66 million kWh annually, which is more than enough to power 36,000 three-person houses and save 22,000 tonnes of normal coal and 54,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
It is rather unexpected that the same partners would soon reveal another massive turbine, this one with a rating of 13.6MW, so soon after the first one was presented. In addition to the new turbine, this puts Goldwind at the vanguard of a group of Chinese OEMs that are presently meeting and exceeding the size of models planned by western rivals like Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, and GE.
The CTG's head said their strategy was developed in response to government requests for China to establish its own cutting-edge technology that can compete on the global stage.
The Goldwind/CTG announcement follows a similar one by MingYang, another Chinese firm working on a 16MW model, which said earlier this year that it will release a 14MW model in the next year, as reported by Recharge News. The 16.7MW offshore design from CSSC Haizhuang was also announced by Recharge.
The original equipment manufacturers' (OEMs) primary focus is on expanding their presence in China's booming offshore wind industry, which is now the largest in the world, and expanding further afield to offer an alternative to the western companies that have traditionally dominated the market outside of Chinese waters.
