While most cruise lines have released anticipated return to service dates, few have provided concrete details as to what exactly cruising will look like once the no sail order is lifted. Well, that changed this past week, as the first cruise line released details of onboard health and safety protocols that will be in place on the line's ships. This detailed plan had us questioning if this is what cruising will REALLY look like once we resume sailing.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line was the first cruise line to reveal its detailed health and safety protocols this past week.
First and foremost, the cruise line announced that it is limiting the capacity on the ship to 60%. This will increase guest to space ratios and encourage social distancing. Further, once onboard the cruise ship, all shops, entertainment, and recreational venues will have a limited guest capacity of 50% to provide ample space between passengers.
Prior to boarding the ship, guests will complete online check-in and receive an assigned arrival time to reduce crowds at the terminal. While cruise lines normally don’t enforce these assigned boarding times, we certainly see this becoming the industry standard. So, make sure to do your self-check-in early to get an optimal time.
At the terminal, guests will be required to complete a temperature check and heath declaration.
Onboard the ship, there will be strict sanitation efforts. All staterooms will be cleaned with hospital grade disinfectants. All public areas will be cleaned multiple times a day, with high traffic areas disinfected up to 10 times a day.
Social distancing will occur in all public venues, including theaters and restaurants. The cruise line confirmed that all front line staff will be wearing masks throughout the ship. Further, crew working in restaurants will wear gloves, hats, aprons, and masks when serving guests. How other public areas, such as the promenade, elevators, or bars on ships will enforce social distancing guidelines is unclear at this time.
Also, it is not clear yet if guests will need to wear masks. At present, there is no mention of this requirement in the cruise line's plan.
All of these changes raise serious questions about what cruising will be like after the global pandemic. Many of these proposed changes, while they might be medically necessary, will be difficult to enforce we suspect.
Would you cruise with these protocols in place?
