A Turkish court sentenced Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan to death on Tuesday on charges of treason for leading a 15-year fight for Kurdish autonomy in southeast Turkey.
These pictures -- shot by state-run TRT television -- show the head of the three judge panel, Judge Turgut Okyay, announcing the death sentence.
Ocalan's efforts to read a statement at the end of the trial -- to which access is heavily restricted -- went no further than the courtroom.
Turkish television refused to broadcast his words.
A somber looking Ocalan showed no reaction to the verdict -- a ruling that was widely expected.
Every death sentence is automatically appealed in Turkey.
If the appeals court reaffirms the verdict, it will go to parliament and then President Suleyman Demirel for approval, a process that could take months.
