Dragula was the inspiration for the most famous of all Rob Zombie songs. We will get back to that in a couple minutes.
During The Munsters TV Show; Herman had lost the Munsters Koach in a drag race in the episode "Hot Rod Herman". The Dragula car was created by Grandpa Munster so he could win back The Munster Koach.
In the 1966 movie Munster, Go Home! There is an alternate origin. Here Herman crashes a Jaguar limousine owned (and raced) by the Munster family of England. Grandpa then builds the Drag-u-la, using the engine from the Munster Koach. This way Herman can drive it in a cross-country race.
Meanwhile in North Holywood Richard "Korky" Korkes Manager of Barris Kustoms, made a deal with an unnamed funeral director to obtain a real coffin. It was illegal to sell a coffin without a death certificate, so he paid in cash, and it was agreed the coffin would be left outside the rear door of the funeral parlor where the George Barris crew would collect it after dark. Therefore the fiberglass body of DRAG-U-LA was built from a real fiberglass coffin.
It was equipt with a 350HP, 289CI Ford Mustang V-8 engine, with a four-speed manual transmission. Topped off with two four-barrel carburetors mounted on a Mickey Thompson Ram-Thrust manifold.
The rear tires were 10.50-inch Firestone racing slicks, mounted on custom 10-inch Rader wheels. Each hubcap boasted a large silver spider. Front tires were 4-inch Italian tires on Speedsport English buggy - wire wheels. One of the best features is the Exhaust. Four Zoomie style organ pipes on each side of the car. Antique lamps on the front and rear complete the Munster look
There were some changes made to the car, for different filming in the Munster, Go Home movie vs the television series.
Now back to the Rob Zombie connection. The song "Dragula" released in August of 1998 has become Zombie's most recognizable song as a solo artist. It is also his best-selling song, and had sold over 717,000 copies in the U.S. by 2010. The song is based on the drag racer "DRAG-U-LA" from the sitcom The Munsters. The song first appeared in the HellBilly album.
The song appears in the films like; Idle Hands and The Matrix. It also appeared on the soundtracks for the video games like Twisted Metal 4, Jet Grind Radio, Sled Storm (1999), Gran Turismo 2 and in the 2012 game Twisted Metal.
The Dragula is a playable car in Twisted Metal 4. Don't worry about trying to hunt for it. I will include convenient links to the game, Munster movie, also Dragula and Munster Koach cars in the description.
