This video provides a little comparison between the sounds of an acoustic archtop and a Maccaferri style guitar. The comparson is not entirely fair, since the Macaferri guitar is much louder . The archtop guitar played here is optimized for volume, but nothing keeps up with a really good gypsy guitar.
Both guitars were made by the German master luthier Henning Doderer. They are both outstanding, very light in construction and made from beautiful solid woods. The strings on the Gysy guitar are Argentines 10's and on the Archtop are Thomastik Infeld Bebop 13's.
The guitars were mic'ed with a SM58 microphone into GarageBand. This is not optimal and both guitars can sound better. But it at least is good enough to get an idea how they sound like (not withstanding my less than stellar playing; I actually was hitting the archtop way too hard).
Anyways, hope this is of some interest to some people out here :-)
