“It comes from the heart and then it flows right out of me,” Beverley Mitchell, a health care aide at Fort Vermilion Health Centre.
“I like keeping the clients comfortable with care and compassion. I'm here to take care of them. I do a lot of things with them. I interact with them quite a bit in their language, whether it be Cree or Dene - and I cook for them.”
Along with other meals, Beverley ensures she makes patients feel more at home with one of her specialties – Bannock.
“It’s important for the Indigenous patients who come here to have that connection,” she explains. “Whether it's your Bannock, or you know, your presence, or the fact that you speak their language.”
“It's really important for them to feel like this is their home.”
