Province Wide Rounds is a collaboration between the UBC Division of Nephrology and BC Renal.
As part of BC Renal’s province-wide rounds, Dr. Adeera Levin provides an overview of an important study exploring the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccinations in kidney patients. The study is being done by the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force (CITF) and the Vaccine Surveillance Reference Group (VSRG), at sites in BC and Ontario.
0:06:00 – Background
Dr. Levin begins by providing a timeline of the pandemic and vaccine roll out in BC. This includes the total number of kidney patients who have tested positive for COVID-19, and data on who has been vaccinated with one or two doses, and whether those vaccines were mixed.
0:11:00 – Vaccines Responses
She then highlights data from previous studies, which found that COVID-19 vaccines are less effective in people on maintenance HD, older patients, and people who are immunocompromised.
0:15:00 – A Collaborative Study
Dr. Levin provides the rationale for this latest study by the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force, which will look at serological samples from patients at different time points after vaccination. The aim is to study vaccination response and safety.
0:21:00 – Recruitment and Roll Out
She provides an overview of how patients will be recruited and sent kits that can be completed at home. Samples are then mailed back to the laboratory for analysis.
0:24:00 – Booster Study
Dr. Levin then discusses a second story that will explore the effectiveness of third shots in kidney patients who have had poor responses to the vaccines. She talks about differences between Ontario and BC that will yield interesting insights. She also notes that a communication plan will be in place to convey the results to patients and the public
