The Dharahara Tower in Kathmandu has a rich history that spans centuries and a legacy of resilience.
Old Tower:
First Tower (1824 AD): The initial Dharahara Tower was constructed in the year 1824 AD. Unfortunately, it met its demise during the devastating earthquake of 1834 AD.
Second Tower (1834 AD): A second iteration of the tower was built in 1834 AD, only to face a similar fate during the earthquake of 1934 AD. It was during this time that Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher JBR took up the task of rebuilding the tower.
However, the saga continued:
2015 AD Earthquake: In 2015, another catastrophic earthquake struck, causing the old tower to crumble entirely. It was a moment of great loss for Nepal.
New Tower:
In the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake, Nepal embarked on a journey of revival and reconstruction. On December 27, 2018, the foundation stone for the new Dharahara Tower was ceremoniously laid, marking a fresh start.
Inauguration:
The dawn of a new era arrived on April 24, 2021, when the newly constructed Dharahara Tower was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr. K.P. Sharma Oli.
Estimated Cost:
The resurrection of this iconic landmark came at an estimated cost of 3.48 billion Nepalese Rupees, a testament to the nation's commitment to preserving its heritage and culture.
