Keys to Improving Outcomes of Tree Planting Campaigns

Abstract:

Dr. Holl will briefly summarize recent initiatives to increase tree cover globally and controversies surrounding those efforts. The focus of the presentation will be on providing guidance on where, whether, and how to plant trees to successfully scale up efforts to increase the success of these initiatives over the long-term. Dr. Fagan will highlight key considerations in targeting, tracking, and reporting restored tree cover, particularly at regional scales. Dr. Brancalion will discuss best practices for planning, implementation, and monitoring to improve outcomes of these initiatives, highlighting the pros and cons of different approaches to increase tree cover in different socio-ecological contexts.

Biosketch
Karen Holl is a Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on understanding how local and landscape scale processes affect ecosystem recovery from human disturbance and using this information to restore damaged ecosystems. Her current research focuses in rain forests in Latin America and chaparral, grassland and riparian systems in California. She oversees a long-term tropical forest restoration study in southern Costa Rica and has worked with students and collaborators in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and Panama. She advises numerous land management and conservation organizations in California and internationally on ecological restoration and most recently has been working with international conservation groups to improve the outcome of large-scale initiatives to increase tree cover. She is the author of Primer of Ecological Restoration published in 2020 by Island Press. 

Matthew Fagan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University with a dissertation on changes in forest connectivity in northern Costa Rica, and did postdoctoral work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. As both a geographer and ecologist, he applies remote sensing (i.e., satellite image analysis) and GIS techniques to conservation problems in human-dominated landscapes, particularly in the tropics and subtropics.

Pedro Brancalion is a Professor of Tropical Forestry at the University of São Paulo, Brazil and vice-coordinator of the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact. His research focuses on the development of innovative forest restoration approaches in human-modified tropical landscapes, aimed at transforming restoration into an economically viable land use with greater potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation and human wellbeing. He has a background as an agronomist and has worked in close collaboration with farmers, agricultural companies, and conservation NGOs to develop large-scale restoration programs, as well as with policy makers in Brazil to develop novel legal instruments and strategic plans for restoration.
