This is a patient of mine that needed a C5 corpectomy and anterior cervical fusion from C4 to C6! They are doing fantastic! A cervical corpectomy is a surgery where the spine surgeon will remove the part of the vertebral body in front of the spinal cord. This is done when the bone spurs or disc herniation is behind the large column of bone, as opposed to at the level of the disc space (more common).
Once this column of bone is removed, the spinal cord is “decompressed” and no longer is being squeezed. 🥰
A titanium cage will then be placed into this void to provide stability.

My patients can expect to be in a cervical collar for 6 weeks after the surgery. They will go home in 2-3 days. They need to walk after surgery THAT DAY! 👍

While complete fusion will take 4-9 months, most will have almost all restrictions lifted after 3 months!
