The hardest part of quitting drinking is making the decision to quit drinking.
This decision is difficult but completely worthwhile, and nothing worthwhile in life is easy. Unfortunately it took me my own personal low to realize I needed to change, which is true for most. If you are determined enough in your decision and stay the course, eventually great things will start happening to you.
It took me about 3 months to get my senses and perspective back. You will hear people refer to this stage as the "Pink Cloud" effect where everything is absolutely 'great'. At about the 1 year mark I gained a lot of clarity and also more strength to continue this path of sobriety.
But early on in sobriety it is helpful to not look too far into the future. In Alcoholics Anonymous you will hear "One Day At a Time" which is helpful to not be overwhelmed and keep the plan simple. AA is 100% a great program and I'm very grateful it exists. Early on it was comforting and also empowering to be in a room with so many people just like me. However I eventually stopped going and for whatever reason that is frowned upon by many in AA. Some people go to AA meetings their entire life and others don't go at all. You have to do what is right for you and whatever it takes to stay sober at any cost.
That being said, you will have to let go of some friends that are not supportive or bad influences to your life goal, Sobriety. The thought of this at first is difficult but just know you will make plenty of new friends being sober as it is kind of an underground society. You will find out that people you never realized were sober are.
I wish every person who is being controlled by their addiction to alcohol or drugs the strength, determination, and positive momentum to break away and beat their addiction. Being sober is an awesome lifestyle and the feeling of freedom is unmatched.
Quotes that have stuck with me:
"If you don't like being sober, go back and your misery will be refunded"
- Awesome old guy I met once
"Quitting drinking is hard, but worthwhile, and nothing worthwhile in life is easy."
