The reason I believe these to be beneficial springtails and not something more harmful like thrips is because of (1) the bug speed - beneficial bugs tend to move quickly whereas thrips hardly move (2) lack of leaf damage or sign of pests on the foliage - it was only in the moss.

Here’s my secret sauce recipe for insecticidal soap. It’s 1.5tsp neem with 0.5tsp Castile soap per quart of warm water. Peppermint oil is extra because some can’t stand the smell of neem, but the peppermint is an added deterrent for pests. Consistency is key especially if you are dealing with an active infestation. Spray every 3 days (or every 2 weeks for cleaning and maintenance). Like any oil, avoid using in direct sunlight or leaves can burn - I spray in the evening.
