SANDWICH HARBOUR | NAMIBIA | TOP SPOTS
Sandwich Harbour was eventually abandoned to the whistling wind, the birds and jackals. In 1890, the sand spit protecting the natural bay broke off, making the harbour too shallow for ships to enter, forcing people to make their way overland across miles of desert. Today, it is part of the Namib-Naukluft Park.
Why is it called Sandwich Harbour?
Some say it comes from the German word “Sandfisch” meaning sand fish or shark, but most sources point to a ship – the HMS Sandwich – that visited the bay in the late 18th century.
How to visit Sandwich Harbour?
Sandwich Harbour lies 64km south of Walvis Bay along a rough-hewn track which can only be accessed with a 4×4 vehicle. It is best to go on a guided Sandwich Harbour Tour, or on a Guided self-drive tour. Sandwich Harbour was attractive to seafarers, as a destination for fresh water, meat, whaling and fishing.
Namibia has a few places that is not travelled by many, Sandwich harbour being one of them.
If you take a self drive guided tour you will need 4x4 experience, sand driving and some dune driving as you car will run through loose sand and dance to the music of the roaring dunes.
We picked a day where we had terrible winds, so our footage can not really be used, all you hear is the singing of the wind. The view made up for every little thing as well as the amounts of wildlife that we saw. We had a super guide full of interesting info. I believe there is also a different route guided by one of our friends, let me know down in the comments if you want to see that route?
Hope you like our vlog on Sandwich harbour, this wont be the last one. We will be back! Especially in the whale season when they visit the bay.
