And probably the only solo...haha.
I'm actually too lazy to double-check but they usually don't have solos except for a guest solo like this. Buuut correct me if I'm wrong. I still haven't listened to the last album.
Let's see if this is one of those description that takes longer to read than to watch the video.
So, this one has been on my bucket list for almost six years now. Yeah, I already transcribed and tabbed this in 2015. Practiced it for ages, but never really got it down for a good video. I'd love to share the tab with you guys but I double checked to see if Jason sells one for the song and he does. Instead of getting into trouble for sharing it, go to Jasons store and buy it :)
I do think I'm pretty close in terms of fingerings and overall playing "logic". Having learned a few of Jasons solos I think this comes close to his fingering style. It's kinda hard to tell from the recording because it's so clean, and a bit in the background in the mix. The attack of the notes is pretty much perfect on the original too. Same with the timing. It was one of those songs that was really easy to transcribe. You could slow it down to 25% and still be able to tell what's being played. (btw, that's how transcribe stuff, just slowing it down until I can tell what's being played or make sense of it) Also, this solo would make a great one for a discussion about studio recording enhancement techniques. I'm pretty sure I couldn't play this with the same consistent attack as on the record. But I actually don't want to start that discussion haha.
Talking about studio techniques. I almost had the wrong video for the audio haha. Comping is finally possible in Ableton 11, which makes it really easy to just record take after take without making new tracks or anything, and then just decide on the final take when you're done recording. I had like 20 complete takes of this. (As you can see, there's already a recorded take on the track. I just recorded on the same track, and it creates "take lanes" for each new take, which you can later open and review) So yeah, I don't really have a system for sorting those takes except manually going through the audio and video and looking for spots that make each take special. Was kinda hard to tell here because they were all the same with different amounts of sloppiness haha. Here I checked all slides and bendings. I should definitely get a different system lol
I would've recorded this on my Les Paul, but the solo goes beyond the 22nd fret, so it was time for the Harley Benton 8 String. Well, for me active pickups are a bit easier to play in terms of dynamics, so that was a big plus.
Back when I learned and practiced this song for the first time I had trouble with the first fast arpeggio and some of the fast alternate picking parts. Interestingly, the new alternate picking technique I recently adopted was not really of any use here. It helped me a lot on the fast alternate picking runs in the middle of the solo but the ending run, where I thought it would be great, there it was actually making things worse, or at least not better. My usual wrist picking was more accurate and easier to do. (This take features that new approach though. Couldn't really decide while recording. Some takes had my classic wrist picking and some had that new more forearm focused picking) I guess, while it's a really fast solo, it's not super duper ultra fast. Articulating the groupings was easier with my regular technique. Though the pick attack is a bit too string with that technique. Makes fast runs kinda mudddy. Yeah, as you can see, lot's of decisions to make haha.
That fast arpeggio in the beginning, that starts the shredding...yeah, that still gave me trouble haha. Playing seventh chords this way is always hard for me at faster tempos. It's not a regular sweep, because two of the strings have two notes. And the middle finger has to do a lot, so that's pretty taxing. Those are the main issues with that one. Tempo should be around 230 bpm, so it's a bit on the faster side of things.
Btw, I really like the visual quality this time. Did my color correction differently this time and also had a different perspective. Just wanted to share that haha.
Anyway, what else? Well I just finished Gears Of War 5 with the Hivebusters DLC, and then Call Of The Sea. Now I don't really know what to play. I'm thinking about Final Fantasy 12 but it's a bit too long. So guys, give me recommendations. Preferably from the Xbox Gamepass. I was also thinking about Prey, but I already played that one when it came out.
That's it, enjoy the video :)
