COVID-19 survivor Diana Berrent is New York State’s first donor of convalescent plasma in the race to find therapies against the virus. She says she feels like a “superhero” with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to potentially save others’ lives. Doctors are calling her plasma “liquid gold” because she not just cleared the virus but is also a universal donor. A single COVID-19 survivor, according to medical experts, could provide enough plasma in one sitting to treat two or three other patients. If they donate every seven days, as Berrent has begun doing, one person could donate 10 to 12 units of plasma in a month. Inspired by Berrent, thousands of Americans have begun lining up to donate plasma as a long wait for a COVID-19 vaccine stretches out in front of the world.
