Making quality wine is not simple. Complexity and problems present challenges all along the way. We discuss how to think about quality, problem definition, and root cause analysis. We use fishbone graphics to breakout six universal categories of possible problem groups: Processes, Materials, Equipment, People, Measurements, and Environment. We prioritize variables and contributing factors using the Best of the Best and Worst of the Worst technique. Winemaking decisions are better made using the Kepner-Tregoe analysis method. Make wine your own way, make wine with your own style, but always strive for quality wine.
