If your sternum hurts, it's important to know why. You should make sure any soreness in the area of your sternum is not caused by an internal problem like an ailing heart or a lung condition.
The two most common causes of sternum pain are the following
* A bruised sternum, usually caused by a traumatic blow to the chest (from an accident or during sports activity), and
* A condition called costochondritis, or inflammation of the cartilage that connects your sternum to your ribs.
To relieve pain caused by either of these conditions, you can do the following.
* Apply with hot compresses or ice packs to see which works better, and reapply several times a day until the soreness goes away.
* Take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation.
* Rest and limit your movements, taking care to avoid lifting, pushing or pulling any heavy object.
