Thousands of Iranians have taken part in an annual mass rally in Tehran to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iran organizes the nationwide rally every February 11 to highlight the overthrow of the Western-backed Shah monarchy four decades ago. Domestically, the event is also known as the Ten Days of Dawn and commemorates the return of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini from exile in 1979.
