Water retention is building up of excess fluid in the body which is observed with swollen feet and ankles. Puffy face, swollen hands and wrists, bloating sensation in the stomach and sudden weight gain. This may be a common symptom indicating disorders of kidney, liver, heart. It can be due to pregnancy, excess sodium, hormonal changes or more. Even a sedentary lifestyle with zero physical activity can result in water retention and it is definitely unhealthy. There are a few dietary modifications that we can do to deal with water retention. Firstly we know that even if we are dehydrated, as a survival mechanism, the body can store water. Hence the first step is to include a good amount of water on a regular basis. Atleast 2 to 2 and half liters per day is deal. Secondly remove sodium intake by cutting down on processed foods and salt .Sodium can help you to gain water at the same time, sugar avoid to get rid of this sodium, and hence we should avoid sugar as well. On the other hand, include foods that are rich in potassium such as bananas, berries, raisins, avocado, and oranges, Thirdly , we need a good amount of proteins to maintain a proper water balance in the body an hence should include a lot of protein rich foods like pulses, nuts, eggs, chicken , fish. Studies also show that vitamin B deficiency especially Vitamin B 6 can also result in water retention. So we should include a good amount of Vitamin B 6 in the form of milk and dairy, through nuts, through broccoli and other green leafy vegetables. Finally include a lot of diuretics which helps you flush out excess fluids, green tea, herbal tea, herbal water, parsley, cucumber, water melon, cranberry, ginger are few of the diuretics.
