In this interview with Wow's Kim Lifton, Cotter says he receives countless essays each year written about people other than the student who is applying. "Every year, I read about the wonders of Aunt Rose and how the world stopped for three seconds when she died." Cotter says he wants to read about you, not your dead aunt. Another mistake: Students talk about what MSU can do for them rather than what the student can do for MSU."What can you do to make us better? It ought to be personalized and thoughtful, truthful, poignant and matter of fact."
