Ten years ago, Poland was the poster child of European integration and democratic transformation among former Soviet satellites. Today, under the conservative Law and Justice Party, the government has co-opted the courts, tried to muzzle independent media and is in constant friction with the European Union. Meanwhile the country’s embrace and support of Ukrainian refugees has given it a rosier image and made its story even more complex. Can it be restored to liberalism and democracy, and if so, how?
