Welcome to month two in my free music production course where I’m helping you to become a competent producer in 365 days. My approach is all about covering the fundamentals properly. When I was learning music production, I became sick of content online being sporadic, bitty, superficial, or even factually inaccurate. I promise to cover the fundamental topics properly, giving you the detail you need to genuinely understand what you’re doing, not just copying settings from someone else’s screen without understanding what it is you’re trying to achieve.
Always keep an eye of your mono compatibility. When you’re adding moving parts to your stereo image it can be easy to get carried away and lose sight of your mono compatibility. Throughout this process, I would recommend having a balance or correlation meter up to keep an eye on. You’re looking to keep an eye on two things here. Firstly, you want to ensure that the correlation stays in the positive. The closer to +1 you are the better. But if you drop below 0 then you have significant mono compatibility issues. The second thing is to check the overall balance of your mix between the left and right speakers. This is like balancing your scales, ensuring that you have equal weight on both sides. You’ll want to check your whole song for both of these things. As the instruments and positions of things change, their interaction and weighting will also change. So, play your whole track through looking at these two meters and make any adjustments as necessary. It seems like a bit of a fuss, but I promise you’ll notice a massive difference in the end when you have beautifully balanced mixes that will translate on any sound system.
