Sometimes you'll hear:
"Astronauts can't go through the Van Allen Belts" or "The Van Allen Belts are deadly and impenetrable". Is that true? Lets dig into it.
The Van Allen belts are layers of charged particles that encircle the Earth due to its magnetic field. They form protective barriers that trap these particles, shielding the planet from harmful solar radiation.
There is an inner Van Allen Belt, consisting mostly of protons.
And then an Outer Van Allen Belt, consisting mostly of electrons.
When the Apollo astronauts went to the moon they took a path which avoided the more dangerous inner belt completely.
What does Dr. James Van Allen himself say about the belts?
A person in the cabin of a space shuttle in a circular equatorial orbit in the most intense region of the inner radiation belt would be subjected to a fatal dosage of radiation in about one week"
"However, the outbound and inbound trajectories of the Apollo spacecraft cut through the outer portions of the inner belt and because of their high speed spent only about 15 minutes in traversing the region and less than 2 hours in traversing the much less penetrating radiation in the outer radiation belt. The resulting radiation exposure for the round trip was less than 1% of a fatal dosage"
