Google has a history of creating April Fool Pranks. Although Google will not be sharing any Pranks for this year, I thought it would be a fun idea to look at their top 10 pranks.
In 2005, Google launched a beverage drink that would “optimize one's use of the Google search engine by increasing the drinker's intelligence.” The drink was said to come in "4 great flavors": Glutamate Grape, Sugar-Free Radical , Beta Carroty , and Sero-Tonic Water.
In 2006, tagged with the motto: “Dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google Romance,” this was Google’s fake stab at online dating. Using Soulmate Search you can find the love of your life. The whole site included an in-depth FAQ and tour. Eight easy steps to dating.
In 2007, Google announced its free new archiving option for Gmail users, funded by advertisements printed on the back of each page. The service would literally print off your emails on “96% post-consumer organic soybean sputum” and then snail-mail them to you.
In 2007 Google TiSP would make use of a standard toilet and already existing sewage lines in your home to provide free Internet connectivity at a high speed of 8 Mbit/s or up to 32 Mbit/s with a paid plan. The user would drop a weighted end of a long, Google-supplied fiber-optic cable in their toilet and flush it. Around 60 minutes later, the end would be recovered and connected to the Internet by a "Plumbing Hardware Dispatcher (PHD)".
In 2008, Google used their recently acquired YouTube for the ultimate Rick Roll April Fools prank. On the video site’s international homepages, every featured video linked back to Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.
In 2010, Google unveiled its Translate for Animals application for Android. It allowed the search giant to 'encourage greater interaction and understanding between animal and human'. You select the animal from a menu and then translate their noises into human language.
In 2012, Google introduced a new input method designed for the future: Gmail Tap. Gmail Tap takes the keyboard from 26 keys to just two. Every letter of the alphabet is represented by a simple pattern of dots and dashes. Although just a joke, you can get a Morse Code keyboard that looks similar on the Play Store.
In 2013, Google announced Google Nose BETA for Chrome and Android, which as the name suggests enabled users to search on the basis of smells. The service supposedly allowed users to search for specific smells and scents across Google's search index.
In 2015, Google unveiled a cute physical version of Google Assistant in the form of Google Panda. Google Panda's cute feature is mainly attributed to its shoe-button eyes and its soft rounded design. Moreover, the design was inspired by Yu-hin, a real and live panda. Google Panda is mobile since the user can bring it anywhere he goes. It has arms that can cling tightly to a user's own arm, allowing one to "talk" to it while on the go. The shockproof feature shows that Google Panda is safe from an unexpected fall.
In 2019, Google introduced Google Tulip which provides you the ability to talk to your tulips. Google says advancements in AI have allowed Google Assistant to understand what tulips are saying as well as translate between Tulipish and "dozens" of human languages. Google is already working on communicating with other plants, including cacti.
Not all of Google’s pranks have been fake products though. Gmail was released just before midnight on March 31st 2004, meant to seem like an April Fools’ prank, because Gmail’s unprecedented convenience was almost too good to be true but as we know today Gmail is a real product.
