Thanks to the largely still intact landscape, the Maderanertal, an eastern tributary valley of the Reusstal valley, is one of the most original mountain valleys of the Swiss Alps and a popular hiking destination in the canton of Uri. The name of the valley originates from the Madran family, which came from the small Leventina village of Madrano in the Ticino municipality of Airolo and emigrated to Altdorf in the canton of Uri in the 15th century. The valley is traversed by the Chärstelenbach creek, and probably for this reason used to be called Kerstelental. The creek rises at the Hüfisee lake (1,634 m above sea level) and joins the Reuss near Amsteg.
On the northern side, the Gross Ruchen (3,138 m above sea level) as well as the Gross and Chli Windgällen (3,187 m above sea level) sit enthroned above the valley. Towards the south, the Maderanertal is connected with the Val Strem valley and the Surselva valley via the Oberalpstock (3,328 m above sea level) and Chrüzli Pass (2,347 m above sea level). At the eastern end of the valley, the Gross Düssi (3,256 m above sea level), the Schärhorn (3,295 m above sea level) and the Clariden (3,267 m above sea level) are located.
The rear part of the Maderanertal can be reached via the aerial cableway, which leads from Bristen to Golzern.
