Box Canyon Swimming Hole along Christopher Creek

The Box Canyon Swimming Hole is located at the end of the Box Canyon Trail along Christopher Creek. It can be accessed by both the Highway 260 just south of the town of Christopher Creek, or by following the creek from the Christopher Creek Campground.

Christopher Creek in Christopher Creek, Arizona

Christopher Creek begins high atop the Mogollon Rim and continues downward for 3.3 miles through the town of Christopher Creek. Christopher Creek provides a variety of recreational opportunities including Fishing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and camping. Christopher Creek is well stocked with catchable size rainbow trout from spring through late summer. It also contains a self-sustaining population of wild brown trout.

To reach Christopher Creek, take highway 260 north of Payson to the which passes over Christopher Creek before you exit at the Christopher Creek turnoff. From the town of Christopher Creek turn north on FR 284 until you reach the Sea Canyon parking area. The Arizona Game and Fish department stocks this section of the creek with catchable size rainbow trout bi-weekly from spring until fall.

The section upstream from the Sea Canyon parking area is public land and not restricted. About 100 yards below the parking area there is a fence marking private property. However, anglers are allowed access to the property provided they remain in the stream bed area. Christopher Creek provides opportunities for bait fishermen and fly-fisherman alike. Summer weekends tend to draw the most anglers while a fisherman may find himself with this beautiful stream all to himself on weekdays or while fishing it in the fall, winter and early spring.

Christopher Creek Campground 

With an elevation over a mile-high (5640 ft), Christopher Creek Campground's crisp, fresh air and vibrant views are a joy to behold. The facility is tucked along the banks of the spring-fed Christopher Creek, which passes just below the Mogollon Rim.  The family-friendly campground has 43 sites on both sides of the creek, plus a group site that accommodates a maximum of 25 people. 


See Canyon Trail along Christopher Creek

See Canyon Trail is an 8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Payson, Arizona that features a river and is rated as difficult, with an elevation gain of 1,715 feet. The trail is relatively easy, but most of the gain in elevation is the last .5 miles up the rim. There is also a 1 mile round trip diversion to See Springs if you so choose. The trail ends at the top of the Mogollon Rim with a limited view. The best scenery is the flowing creek and the lush Ponderosa Pine forest filled with ferns along the way. You will cross the creek several times during the hike.

This scenic trail follows beside the clear mountain stream of Christopher Creek through the lush green forest to the top of the Mogollon Rim. The trail is best used from April until November and can be accessed from Christopher Creek below or the #300 road on the Rim above. Dogs are also able to use this trail.


The Town of Christopher Creek, Arizona

The community of Christopher Creek is tucked into the thick Ponderosa Pine forest below the Mogollon Rim.  The community has a restaurant, a church, a few small stores, and an assortment of cabin rentals. The creek runs through the community and is stocked with trout. Wildlife is abundant here. 

You will find both high end homes and modest cabins in Christopher Creek. It also includes the gated community of Hunter Creek. Most residents are retirees or people owning vacation homes. Home prices in Christopher Creek trend slightly higher than the rest of the area. 

Kohl's Ranch

Not too far from Christopher Creek and Box Canyon located on Tonto Creek about 4 miles west of Christopher Creek on Highway 260 is Kohl’s Ranch.  Here you will find an historic lodge, Kohl's Ranch Stables, and the Zane Grey Barbecue Restaurant that offers summer rentals. The resort also offers cabins on the creek. The creek here is also lined with custom homes with creek access.
