We know you’re busy planning your turkey (to brine or not to brine?), your sides, and your desserts (pumpkin or apple?). It’s also time to start thinking seriously about your Thanksgiving wine. Here’s one word that will steer you in the right direction: Alsace.
The wines of Alsace, which lies on the border between France and Germany, come from seven grape varieties: Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir. All seven pair beautifully with the rich flavors of a Thanksgiving feast.
“Start with a bubbly, fresh, and fruity Crémant d’Alsace” suggests David Jaegle, worldwide export manager of Cave de Ribeauvillé. Crémant d’Alsace is a sparkling wine made in the traditional method. To pair with the star of the show, the turkey, Jaegle recommends a Riesling because of its balance of fruity notes and bright acidity, which will contrast with the rich poultry. Pinot Noir is another great option—its fruity notes, freshness, and smoky aromas are a good foil for heavy stuffing and potatoes. Finish the meal with Gewürztraminer, a spicy complement to pumpkin pie.
