There is a huge migration happening right now: Dragonflies are moving south. Like Monarch butterflies, some dragonflies have a multigenerational migration. Many of these began life far north of here. While they don’t always migrate in swarms, this year they seem to be in a group so large it can be seen on radar. (The blue in this nexrad image is birds and insects on the move.) This mixed group is feeding on gnats and mosquitoes over the sea oats. Most are green darners, but there are also some saddlebags dragonflies. While some are stopping along the way to lay eggs, thousands more are simply flying south: we’ve counted more than a hundred per minute going by. Scientists have analyzed chemicals in their wings to understand that it will be a new generation that migrates north again in the spring. We’re just enjoying the sight of them bouncing along in their journey.
