The National Assembly of Pakistan approved an ambitious Rs18,877 billion budget for the fiscal year 2024-25. The budget, termed by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzaib as a "growth budget," aims to reduce the fiscal deficit through expanded government revenues and reduced expenditures. Despite this, the opposition has labeled the budget as IMF-driven and potentially detrimental to the public.
The government plans to continue promoting macroeconomic stability, with a special focus on increasing the tax-to-GDP ratio and implementing structural reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
This budget also introduces the establishment of a Tax Fraud Investigation Wing to combat tax evasion, particularly targeting the retail and real estate sectors. Noteworthy is the continued exemption of taxes on essential health and educational products, despite economic constraints.
However, opposition leaders criticize the budget’s formulation process, claiming it lacks comprehensive stakeholder engagement and fails to reflect the economic realities and aspirations of the Pakistani people.
