Homoeostasis versus allostasis
Big long words very confusing but actually when you break them down into the basics are very simple concepts.
The term homoeostasis describes being able to keep a constant internal environment. The idea of homoeostasis is the body always stays on balance. This is great in principle but in reality the body is constantly going for a state of change and therefore can very often not stay in a state of balance.
On the contrary allostasis Describes our ability to adapt to any environment. If allostasis is working correctly and we are exposed to some sort of stress I’ll body will be able to adapt to that. If our systems are working correctly it essentially means that if I heart rate goes up it can come back down or if it goes down it can come back up based on what’s going on around us.
We need both systems in place but normally the emphasis is put on homoeostasis when we really should be looking at our ability to adapt.
