With traditional phaco chop, we place the chopper in front of the phaco probe tip, but there are other options. In this video from Dr. Adrian Gavanescu from Bucharest, Romania, we learn his lateral chop technique. This is where he places the chopping instrument lateral to the tip of the phaco probe. Because the high vacuum is firmly holding the nucleus in place, the chopper can easily split the nucleus into smaller fragments. Dr. Gavanescu also has a method of extensive nucleus rotation in order to truly free it from adhesions and also to make cortical clean-up more efficient.
