DHAKA, Aug 19: Renowned folk singer Abdur Rahman Boyati died at Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital in the city at around 7.00am today (Monday). He was 74.
Earlier, he was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition of some neurological and urological complications on Sunday night, family sources said.
He was born in 1939 at Dayaganj under Sutrapur Thana in Dhaka.
The folk maestro had been sick since 2003. He underwent surgery in Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital on 19 June this year.
From a very early age, he came to the traditional music arena. Eventually, he formed a group in 1982 which is customarily known as Abdur Rahman's group. He has over 500 albums comprising of songs of almost all folk genres in his rich music career.
This eminent folk singer and lyricist performed almost everywhere in the country, as well as in more than 40 countries across the world.
To note, he even sang at the White House in 1990, being invited by President George Bush Sr. He was a recipient of six national awards including the Presidency Award of Bangladesh.
