The 4 most common materials are brass, stainless steel, nylon and PVC. The right choice is very important to ensure a long service life, and optimal performance of the valve, and no contamination. In this video, I explain the differences between brass, stainless steel, and plastics, nylon, & PVC.
First brass. Brass is suitable for neutral and non-corrosive media. It is resistant to water, compressed air, oils, and many other media. It is versatile, durable, and resistant to relatively high temperatures between -100 and 200°C or -150 to 390 Fahrenheit. It is also resistant to relatively high and pressures. This makes it an ideal material for most applications. Nickel-plated brass is also available, which also makes it resistant to for example seawater and weaker acids and bases.
Then stainless steel. Stainless steel has very good general chemical resistance against almost every medium. It is also very wear-resistant and resistant to high temperatures above even 300°C or 570 Fahrenheit and also high pressures. Despite its strong chemical resistance, it is not suitable for hydrochloric acid, bleach, and strong basic media.
Then there's the plastics. Nylon has good chemical and mechanical properties. It is also resistant to saltwater, organic solvents, oils, and fats. Unfortunately, it can't withstand acids or bases. For that, PVC is a better material. PVC is very suitable for corrosive media such as most acids and bases, salt solutions, and organic solvents. The disadvantage of most plastics is that they have lower pressure and temperature range than metals.
