Nearly two centuries ago, the remote Galápagos Islands and their fascinating creatures—giant tortoises, marine iguanas, equatorial penguins, and more—inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Today, the near-mythic archipelago remains a vital scientific laboratory. Dr. Arturo Izurieta, Executive Director of the Charles Darwin Foundation and Dr. Matthew James, author of Collecting Evolution, discuss the Academy's storied relationship with the Galápagos; why we must protect the islands’ globally-unique biodiversity; and how conservation partnerships are helping scientists understand and respond to climate change, invasive species, and human impacts. Dr. Shannon Bennett, Chief of Science at the Academy, moderated this conversation.
