Toronto Mayor John Tory and medical officer of health Eileen de Villa provided an update on the City's response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.
The announcement was regarding the City of Toronto entering Stage 2 of Phase 2 of easing of COVID-19 restrictions, which will begin on June 24.
On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that as of 12:01 a.m. on June 24, the City of Toronto and Peel region would be joining the rest of the province in entering Stage 2 of Phase 2 of the province's economic reopening amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Windsor-Essex area will remain in Stage 1 until further target metrics are met.
During the press conference, the mayor also said that there will be "increased demand on municipalities and services that will come with Stage 2" of the economic reopening. The city continues to experience "unprecedented" costs in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and "significant revenue losses" due to the continuing pandemic.
Tory announced that beginning as early as this week, municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will begin making budgetary decisions for the rest of the year, and perhaps for 2021, which might lead to service cuts due to the financial strain.
