(15 Nov 2011) PAUL MCCARTNEY LETTER SELLS FOR $55,412 AT AUCTION
A hand written letter by Paul McCartney fetched more than $55,000 at an auction on Tuesday(15 NOV.) in London.
The letter was part of memorabilia from rockers like The Beatles and The Who which went under the hammer at an auction at Christie's London.
Comprising of over 200 items, the Rock and Pop Memorabilia sale featured everything from instruments and clothing to awards and signed items.
Speaking about the McCartney letter, Neil Roberts of Christie's, explained how the letter could have very easily been lost forever, but luckily it was discovered in 2011 by an anonymous collector at a car boot sale in Bootle, Liverpool.
"It was a very lucky find in that the individual was at a car boot sale and bought a book and when he took it home basically this folded up letter fell out, he obviously read it and saw that it was very interesting but didn't know if it was authentic and so forth. He brought it to us and we are glad to say that yes it is actually Sir Paul's handwriting and it's in response to an advert that was placed in the local Echo (newspaper) on the 10th August 1960."
The letter had been expected to fetch around ?7,000 (pounds sterling), but ended up exceeding all expectation and selling for ?34,850 ($55, 412).
The bid was placed by an anonymous telephone bidder.
Other items in the sale included Pete Townshend's guitar which sold for ?34,850 ($55, 412).
The top bid however went to John Lennon's 'Bed Peace,' artwork created by Lennon when he stayed in bed for a week in Montreal in 1969. The item, again bid for by an anonymous telephone bidder, sold for ?97,250 (154,628).
In total the sold items in the auction fetched a combined total of ?478,738 ( $761,193).
