After Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945, around 11 million German soldiers were captured as prisoners of war (POWs) by the Allied forces. Approximately 7.8 million surrendered to the Western Allies, fearing Soviet capture. Those in the UK and the US faced forced labor but were treated according to the Geneva Convention. In contrast, German POWs in France experienced harsher conditions due to local resentment. The worst treatment occurred in Soviet camps, where brutal forced labor led to the deaths of over a million German POWs.
