Frank Bensel Jr. Makes History with Back-to-Back Holes-in-One at U.S. Senior Open
Frank Bensel Jr. created a memorable moment at the U.S. Senior Open, even though he didn’t make the cut. During the second round at Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island, the 56-year-old astonished everyone by recording back-to-back holes-in-one.
Bensel’s first ace occurred on the 184-yard par-3 fourth hole. He followed this incredible feat with another hole-in-one on the 203-yard par-3 fifth hole. The odds of achieving a single hole-in-one are about 12,500 to 1, but the chance of making two in consecutive holes is a staggering 67 million to 1, according to the National Hole-in-One Registry.
Despite the remarkable achievement, Bensel finished his round with eight bogeys, resulting in a score of 9-over par for the tournament. Reflecting on his incredible day, Bensel said, “The first one was great. I was kidding around, saying let’s go for another one, and it happened. Everybody just couldn't believe it.”
These aces were the 13th and 14th of Bensel's career, spanning both competitive and recreational play. Outside of tournaments, Bensel works as a golf coach at Century Country Club in Purchase, New York. His career includes participation in six PGA Tour events, three PGA Championships, and the 2007 U.S. Open.
While Bensel may not have advanced in the tournament, his back-to-back aces will certainly go down as a highlight in golf history, showcasing the unpredictable and thrilling nature of the sport.
